The Brierfield Fire and Rescue Department (BVFRD) was founded in 1973 as a volunteer organization to provide fire protection and prevention services to the Brierfield community in cooperation with community organizers. Station 2 was added in 2009 to provide fire protection for the Six Mile community. We serve areas in Bibb and Shelby counties.

Volunteers consist of firefighters, EMS, administrative and auxiliary personnel. Our volunteers are part-time or on-call individuals who typically have other occupations. Although they have “volunteered” to become members, and to respond to calls for help, they are not compensated during the time they are responding to or attending an emergency scene. They are also expected to volunteer time for other non-emergency duties as well, i.e. training, fund-raising, equipment maintenance and much more.

Our firefighters range from rookies who have recently joined to veterans with over 30 years experience. The ranks include not only the men and women who actually deal with fire, but Drivers, Safety Officers, Rehab, Support and Maintenance. The Department also has officers and certified instructors to provide needed training. Training is a critical factor in the efficiency of the fire department and the safety of personnel. Volunteers participate in weekly training, monthly drills, live burns, and multi-departmental training exercises with our mutual aid departments.

BVFRD currently provides an ALS (Advanced Life Support) EMS service with dedicated EMS personnel. The majority of 911 calls received by BVFRD are for emergency medical services.

EMS is not currently available from Station 2 due to lack of equipment and certified personnel. An ambulance responds to medical 911 calls from Six Mile.
